Love Machine, Shocking Blue (1969)

[FR] En me baladant l’autre jour chez Diddy Wah je suis tombé sur le titre “Hot Sand” de Shocking Blue, un groupe hollandais plus connu pour être à l’origine de “Venus”, grand hit de l’année 1969 aux Etats-Unis (et donc partout ailleurs) et qui fut à nouveau un succès dans les années 80 grâce à Bananarama. “Hot Sand” pourtant, n’a que peu à voir avec “Venus”. Ma curiosité m’a donc poussé à me procurer l’album At Home sur lequel se trouvent ces deux titres, et elle fut grandement récompensée ! Sur ce disque se trouve une avalanche de riffs accrocheurs toujours emmenés par la même charge d’énergie par la chanteuse Mariska Veres, et quelques touches de sitar qui rappelllent le contexte psychédélique ambiant. On retrouve tout ça sur “Love Machine”, qui donne à entendre toute la puissance du son de Shocking Blue.

[EN] While visiting Diddy Wah the other day, I fell on “Hot Sand”, a song by Shocking Blue, a dutch band mainly known for “Venus”, a chart-topper of year 1969 in the USA (and everywhere else), also a hit single in the 80s thanks to Bananarama. However, “Hot Sand” only has little similarity with “Venus”. Thus, my curiosity incited me to get the At Home record on which we can find both tracks, and it was rewarded! This album is an avalanch of heavy riffs leaded with high energy by singer Mariska Veres, and a bunch of sitar that reminds the ambient psychedelic context. All these elements are melt on “Love Machine”, that demonstrates the power of Shocking Blue’s sound.
