Une fois éditée et diffusée, la chanson atteindra la première place des charts R&B américains et la 4e des charts pop en 1974, vendant ainsi pas moins de 2 millions de copies.
Le titre fut enregistré avec les musiciens du groupe MFSB et rappelle Curtis Mayfield. Il a également été repris par Massive Attack en 1991 sur leur premier album Blue Lines, version qui a pris un bon coup de vieux contrairement à l’original qui a 34 ans. “Diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin the scene with a gangsta lean, wooh ooh ooh!”

The song is often mistaken for the work of Curtis Mayfield – especially on pirated downloads, where it regularly appears as by Mayfield. If you listen to a lot of Mayfield, though, I think you will realize that it doesn’t really sound like him at all – maybe the vocals, in places, a bit, but not the music, not the overall sound.
My favorite Curtis Mayfield songs these days are mostly from the Curtis/Live album – particularly “Stare & Stare,” “People Get Ready” and “We People Who Are Darker Than Blue” (an all-time fave of mine).

J’ai découvert il y a peu cette magnifique chanson sur une radio américaine qui ne diffuse que de la pure soul ! Je suis resté scotché ! La musqiue de William DeVaughn est une sorte savant mélange entre Curtis Mayfield et Al Green !
Écoutez sur le même album, Blood Is Thicker Than Water” de la même facture que “Be Thankful for What You Got” ou encore “You Can Do It”… extraordinaire !
