Brother’s Gonna Work It Out, Willie Hutch (1973)

[FR] A priori peu enclin à une carrière de chanteur, Willie Hutch, originaire de Los Angeles, commença comme compositeur et producteur. C’est en effet en participant à l’écriture du hit “I’ll Be There” des Jackson 5, à l’époque où Motown décidait de quitter les moteurs de Detroit pour le soleil de Los Angeles, que Berry Gordy (patron du label) décida de l’embaucher en tant qu’auteur-compositeur. Il travailla ainsi avec toutes les vedettes maison, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye et Smokey Robinson.

C’est à cette époque, au début des années 70, alors que la mode hollywoodienne est aux films blaxploitation, que Willie Hutch est appelé pour participer à la bande originale de The Mack. L’album sera un succès notamment grâce au single “Brother’s Gonna Work It Out” qu’il interprète cette fois. La production rappelle le travail de Curtis Mayfield. Le titre commence par une lente introduction flûte et guitare et ne démarre réellement qu’à 1:50. Ca n’est pas de la disco, mais ça y ressemble déjà, avec un rythme binaire bien marqué.

[EN] Willie Hutch is an American soul singer from Los Angeles, Califonia. He started his carreer as a producer and songwriter. Indeed, he worked on “I’ll Be There”, one of the early hit singles of the Jackson 5, by the time when Motown left the motors of Detroit for the sun of Los Angeles, that Berry Gordy hired him as a songwriter. He thus worked with Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson.

By this time, in the early-70′s, whilst blaxploitation movies are the major Hollywood trend, Willie Hutch is demanded to write the score for The Mack. The album will gain commercial success thanks to singles such as “Brother’s Gonna Work It Out” that he interprets. The production reminds Curtis Mayfield‘s work. The track begins with a soft introduction with flute and guitar and really takes off at 1:50. It’s not disco yet but it sounds like it, with this heavy binary rhythm.

El álbum tuvo un gran éxito comercial gracias al single “Brother´s Gonna Work It Out”. La producción recuerda al trabajo de Curtis Mayfield. El tema empieza con una introducción muy suave con flauta y guitarra, hasta el minuto 1:50. No es un tema disco, pero suena como tal, con este ritmo binario y tan fuerte.
