R.M. Blues, Roy Milton (1945)

Avec son rhythme mid-tempo, son riff de cuivres, son accompagnement au piano et la douce voix de Milton, tous les ingrédients du jump blues sont là, qui donneront plus tard naissance au rhythm’ & blues, puis au rock ‘n roll, qui, ironie du sort, mettra fin aux carrières de ces musiciens.

During the postwar in Los Angeles, the night-clubs on Central Avenue strike up a friendship with jump blues, a more danceable kind of blues that gets closer to big band jazz of the time, with its brasses and syncopated rhythms. Among the musicians from that new style is Roy Milton. Born in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, this singer and drummer moves to California in 1933 where he forms his own band, the Solid Senders. Hired on Art Rupe’s new label Specialty Records (which later will discover Little Richard and Sam Cooke), Roy Milton records “R. M. Blues” that will a big hit in the R&B charts in 1945 and will set the tone for the next few years.

With its mid-tempo rhythm, its brasses riff, the piano playing octaves and Milton’s sweet voice, all the ingredients of jump blues that will later give birth to rhythm ‘n blues and rock ‘n roll are laying there. The irony of fate is that those new styles will bury the careers of jump blues musicians.

Durante la postguerra en Los Ángeles, los clubs nocturnos en Central Avenue etablecieron una relación amistosa con el jump blues, un blues más bailable que se acercaba al formato de del jazz big band, con esos vientos caracteristicos y ritmos asincopados de la época. Entre algunos de los músicos de esta nueva corriente se encontraba Roy Milton. Cantante y baterista nacido en Wynnewood, Oklahoma, que en 1933 se movería a California para formar su propia banda the Solid Senders. Contratado en el nuevo sello de Art Rupe, Specialty Records (que algunos años después descubrira a Little Richard y Sam Cooke), registró “R. M. Blues” un gran hit de los charts R&B del año 1945 que establecería el sonido para los años posteriores.

Un medio tiempo, con esos riffs metalúrgicos, un piano repasando escalas y la voz tan dulce de Milton. En definitiva todos los ingredientes del jump blues que más tarde darian paso al rythm ‘n blues y el rock ‘n roll. La ironía del destino es que estos nuevos estilos enterrarían las carreras de los músicos del jump blues.
