On My Shoulders, The Dø (2007)
[FR] Il est des découvertes qu’on chérit. En ce mardi de mars où j’allais assister au concert de la fanfare suédoise I’m From Barcelona à La Cigale (Paris), trois groupes étaient en première partie. On n’attend plus grand chose des premières parties. Trop souvent déçus… Ça sent le réchauffé, le nième groupe pop-rock qui décline à la chaîne des formules bien établies. Mais au fond, on espère. On espère encore vivre ces précieux moments où l’on découvre une nouvelle musique, un nouvel univers qui emballe, qui électrise. On espère juste être à nouveau surpris.
C’est précisément ce qui arriva, lorsque Thedø fit son entrée sur scène. Un batteur entouré d’instruments de cuisine, un grand manitou multi-instrumentiste et une chanteuse vêtue d’une robe blanche à pois verts qui entonne un air aussi étrange qu’envoûtant dans une langue qu’on suppose scandinave. Suivront quelques titres plus pop tout aussi singuliers et prenants que Dan Levy, à l’origine musicien de jazz et compositeur de musiques de films, et Olivia B. Merilahti interprètent avec une présence scénique rarement vue chez un si jeune groupe.
C’est la diversité des styles empruntés qui fait la fraîcheur et l’identité de Thedø, car les influences du groupe balaient un panorama allant d’Igor Stravinsky à Beck en passant par John Coltrane et les Beatles. Autant dire qu’un tel groupe a de quoi surprendre et émerveiller. “On My Shoulders”, probable premier single du groupe, donne le ton, avec cette mélodie accrocheuse sans être facile, cette tension qui jamais ne se libère, ces guitares psychédéliques et la voix enchanteresse d’Olivia. Thedø the next big thing? Sans aucun doute !
[EN] There are some discoveries that we do cherish. On this tuesday of march when I was about to see the Swedish brass band I’m From Barcelona at La Cigale (Paris), there were three opening bands. We no more tend to expect anything from those bands. Too many times we’ve been disappointed… It’s old-hat, we now expect no more than the umpteenth pop-rock band repeating the good old formulas. But deep inside we still hope. We still hope for those precious moments when we discover a new music, a new band that thrills us. We only expect to be surprised again.
And that’s exactly what happened when Thedø came on stage. A drummer surrounded by cooking accessories, a multi-instrumentist and a singer dressed with a green-spotted white dress striking up an enchanting tune in a supposedly Scandinavian language. A few more pop tracks will follow, as singular and absorbing, that Dan Levy, originally a jazz musician and a film score writer, and Olivia B. Merilahti interpret with a presence on stage rarely reached by such a young band.
The diversity is what makes the identity of Thedo’s sound, because the influences of the band go from Igor Stravinsky to Beck with John Coltrane and the Beatles in between. It’s useless to say then that such a band has the ability to surprise and delight. “On My Shoulders”, probably the firt single of the band, sets the tone, with this catching melody, this tension that never releases itself, these psychedelic guitars and Olivia’s enchanting voice. Thedø the next big thing? Without a doubt!
[ES] Hay algunas cosas que uno descubre sin querer. Un martes pasado del mes de marzo cuando fuí a ver a la banda sueca I’m From Barcelona en La Cigale (Paris), éstos fueron teloneados por tres bandas. No esperaba uno mucho de ellos la verdad, son ya demasiadas las decepciones ante los grupos teloneros. Un clásico, no esperabamos más que por enésima vez el típico grupo de pop-rock repitiendo las fórmulas de siempre. Pero en el fondo siempre queda alguna esperanza. Aún esperamos descubrir música nueva, ésos momentos preciosos en los que una nueva banda consigue hacerte estremecer. Y por supuesto aun esperamos que nos vuelva a pasar.
Y esto es exactamente lo que ocurrió cuando Thedø salieron al escenario. Un bateria rodeado por utensilios de cocina, un multi-instrumentista y una cantante de vestido de lunares verdes destancando por su voz encantadora de (supuesto) origen Scandinavo. Unas cuantas canciones pop bastarian después, extrañas y absorventes, que Dan Levy, músico de jazz y compositor de bandas sonoras y Olivia B. Merilahti interpretarian con una presencia en el escenario raramente alcanzado por una banda tan joven.
La diversidad es lo que da personalidad e identidad al sonido de Thedø. Las influencas: desde Igor Stravinsky a Beck pasando por John Coltrane y los Beatles. Asi que es inútil decir que semejante banda tenga habilidad para sorprender. “On My Shoulders”, probablemente el primer single del grupo, da la talla, con esa melodía pegadiza, esa tensión y las guitarras psicodélicas con la voz encantadora de Olivia. Tombé par hasard sur ce groupe y’a 3 jours et je partage exactement le même avis, ce groupe risque de cartonner totalement et tant mieux si c’est le cas! A surveiller de très près :D
Beaucoup de fraicheur dans le style de ce “petit” groupe. La voix de la chanteuse est très agréable et les mélodies sont efficaces.
Pour avoir été de ceux qui ont eu la chance de les entendre devant la BNF a paris pour la fete de la musique, je suis sous le charme :D

Entendue pour la premiere fois au cinéma pour accompagnée la pub oxford. Je suis tombé sous le charme tt de suite, j’espère voir cette petite perle en concert le plus tot possible. :)

Vraiment c’est un groupe que j’ai découvert récemment, j’aime beaucoup, il a énormément de talent.
“And I wonder why” erreur de sens, car c’est ” And You wonder why I carry…”
Vu il y a quelques mois au point FMR et pas franchement convaicu. Je voulais les revoir à la flèche d’or le 18 mais 45 mn pour se préparer ? A la flèche d’or ? Y-a de l’abus…
