Un peu plus tôt la même année, le groupe sortait un EP contenant “Peggy”, une jolie petite chanson bien produite dédiée à la petite amie et future femme de Pedro Gené. “Peggy, sin ti yo a donde voy…”

With a classical music education, Lone Star was one of the best Spanish bands from the city of Barcelona in the 60’s. When coming back from a year he spent in England where he saw the explosion of rock ‘n roll, pianist PedroGené decided to form a band. Mainly influenced by the rhythm ‘n blues he discovered during his stay, the band essentially covered Ray Charles’s songs that they brought to the Spanish audience at the Texas or at the Jamboree in Plaça Reial in the old city of Barcelona. In 1961 they signed to EMI. They released a few EPs consisting of covers from Latin-American, Italian and Anglo-Saxon tunes. Being kind of the Spanish equivalent to The Animals, the record label wanted them to cover the major hits from their English counterparts. In 1964 they sang “LaCasa del Sol Naciente “, a cover of “House of the Rising Sun” which will end up selling more singles than the proper Animals version reaching #1 in whole South America and in Spain.

A few months earlier the band released another EP with a track called “Peggy”, a very nice little song dedicated to Pedro Gené’s then-girlfriend and later wife. “Peggy, sin ti yo a donde voy…”

Con una educación musical clásica, Lone Star fué una de las mejores formaciones de los años 60 en la ciudad de Barcelona. Cuando el pianista Pedro Gené volvió de un año sabático en Inglaterra (donde vivió la explosión del rock desde muy cerca), decidió formar un grupo. Principalmente influenciados por el rythm ‘n blues, Lone Star versioneaban los temas de Ray Charles para luego interpretarlos delante de la audiencia española en sitios como el Texas o el Jamboree en la Plaza Real (casco antiguo de Barcelona). En 1961 firman por EMI y editan unos cuantos EPs que básicamente contienen versiones de canciones latino-americanas, italianas y de temas anglosajones. Siendo el equivalente parecido a los Animals, pero a la española, el sello les obliga a versionear los hits mas famosos de sus queridos homólogos. En 1964 cantan “La Casa del Sol Naciente”, una versión de “House of the Rising Sun” que conseguirá vender más copias que la propia original de los Animals. (Alcanzó el número 1 de las listas en toda Sud America y España)

Son troisième album, Malamarismo, vient de sortir. On y trouve le titre “Te Convierto”, titre court et incisif au flow soutenu. L’instru est également un des meilleurs que j’aie pu entendre récemment avec un rythme élaboré qui semble constamment ralentir et accélérer.

La Mala Rodríguez is a Spanish rap star. She was born in Jerez de la Frontera, Andalusia in 1978 but she grew up in Sevilla where she discovered rap. While in her teens, she was part of the flourishing local scene that also included SFDK and La Alta Escuela finding nationwide fame in the late 90’s when La Mala moved to Madrid. As her name suggests, La Mala Rodríguez is into hardcore rap what can surprise compared to her popularity. Actually her career was launched thanks to the song “Yo Marco el Minuto” which was included in the soundtrack score of Julio Medem’s Lucía y el Sexo in 2000. Also in 2003, the short movie for the single “La Niña”, which depicted the story of a drug-dealing young girl, was censured on some TV channels, thus contributing to her notoriety.

Her third album, Malamarismo, was just released. It features the track “Te Convierto”, a short and incisive track with a sustained flow. The production is also one of the best I recently heard with an elaborated rhythm that it seems is constantly going back and forth.

La Mala es una estrella dentro del rap Español. Nacida en Andalucía, en Jerez de la Frontera, pero criada en Sevilla donde descubre el rap. En sus años mozos a finales de los 90 formó parte de la imparable escena local donde formaciones como SFDK y La Alta Escuela empezaban a ganarse una repercusión a nivel nacional, para mas tarde acabar mudándose a Madrid. Tal como su nombre sugiere, La Mala Rodríguez forma parte del rap duro, algo que sorprende cuando se la compara por su popularidad. De hecho su carrera estalló gracias al tema “Yo Marco el Minuto” incluida en la banda sonora de la película de Julio Medem Lucía y el Sexo en el año 2000. También en el 2003, el videoclip del single “La Niña”, extraído de su segundo álbum, que cuenta la historia de una chica joven traficante de drogas, y que fue censurado en algunos canales de televisión.

Su tercer álbum, Malamarismo, acaba de salir al mercado. En el encontramos la canción “Te Convierto”, un corte breve pero intenso con un ritmo que se va sosteniendo y parece que no pare en ningun momento. La producción es también una de las mejores que recientemente se han podido escuchar, con un ritmo muy elaborado que va y vuelve constantemente.

Né dans le conté de Fort Worth, Texas en 1944, Van Zandt fut élevé dans une famille aisée qui fit sa fortune grâce au pétrole. Il est l’arrière-petit-fils d’Isaac Van Zandt, un homme politique très influent de la République du Texas à l’époque où celui-ci était indépendant. Au début des années 60, il quitte l’université pour se consacrer à la musique. Il rencontre le chanteur Mickey Newbury qu’il accompagne à Nashville où il enregistre les chansons qui l’aideront à se faire un nom.

“Waitin’ Around To Die” illustre l’état psychique perturbé de Van Zandt (il était dépressif et depuis tout petit déjà s’imbibait d’alcool). Sans doute l’une des plus belles chansons qu’il ait écrite, en plus d’être sa toute première.

Townes Van Zandt is considered one of the major singer-songwriters of American folk and country music. His career started in the second half of the 60’s, the decade from which stand out his best works.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1944, raised in a rich family thanks to the petrol business, Van Zandt is the great-grandson of Isaac Van Zandt (a very influential Texas politician during its independence). In the early 60’s, he decided to drop out university to dedicate his life to music, after he discovered his talent and passion. When Van Zandt met Mickey Newbury, he moved to Nashville where he recorded the albums and songs that will later help his popularity to grow up.

“Waitin’ Around To Die” is one of the examples of the altered states of his conscience (he was depressed and since he was a child started to drink alcohol). That’s probably one of the best songs Van Zandt ever wrote, in addition to be the first one. Delightful.

Townes Van Zandt está considerado actualmente como uno de los grandes compositores y cantantes de la música folk y la música country americana. Su carrera comienza a partir de la segunda parte de los 60, y después durante todos los 70’s, 80’s y 90’s a pesar de que su obra magna sea la de su primera etapa en los años 60.

Nacido en el condado de Fort Worth (estado de Texas) en el año 1944 y criado en una familia muy rica gracias al negocio del petróleo, Van Zandt heredero directo de Isaac Van Zandt (político que tuvo muchisima importancia en Texas durante la época de su independencia) fue educado para el cargo de governador, pero decidió renunciar para dedicarse plenamente al mundo de la canción, tras descubrir su talento y pasión. Su música pues está se verá altamente influenciada por la política, y especialmente enfocará sus composiciones en la política que rigen los estados unidos. Cuando Van Zandt conoce a Mickey Newbury se muda a Nashville, logrando salir pues de los típicos y aburridos circuitos locales, y consigue grabar sus canciones y discos, que mas tarde le proporcionarian la repercusion de su fama a nivel internacional.

“Waitin’ Around To Die” es un ejemplo de los estados alterados de la conciencia de Van Zandt (padecía de depresión y desde bien jovencito se tiro al alcohol). Probablemente una de las canciones más bellas que este importante señor compusó en su carrera musical, ademas de ser la primera. Una delicia.

Mais revenons en 1967, alors que les charts anglais s’agitent avec à leur tête les Beatles, les Rolling Stones, les Supremes et les Doors (en Espagne, ce sont Raphael et Karina qui se disputent la première place), le duo lance “La Caza”, titre qui deviendra un classique de la pop espagnole de l’époque (Lori Meyers a d’ailleurs récemment repris ce titre) et dans lequel on peut entendre les réminiscences des ye-yes (”La la ra laa… Ooooo”). La musique du groupe est clairement influencée par les groupes pop-rock anglais et américains (d’aucuns ont dit des Brincos qu’ils étaient les Beatles espagnols) et les thèmes abordés sont principalement l’amour et les femmes. “Te quiero… Yo te quiero. Y eso… Yo te quiero. Y quiero… Ver que luchas por mi amor”.

Juan Pardo and Antonio “Junior” Morales began their career in the 60’s Spanish pop band Los Brincos. In the early ‘67 they decide to split up to form the new duet Juan & Junior only active for the next two years. The few tunes they penned became major hits. In 1968, Juan decides to record on his own a song written by the duo. As Junior discovers the situation he decides to split up. From then on, both artists started to work on their own music.

But in the summer of ‘67, while English charts featured bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Supremes and The Doors (dealing with Spanish charts we can mention Raphael or Karina) the duet released “La Caza” then becoming one of the main references for the pop music of that time (the band Lori Meyers recently covered it). In the song, their first big hit, we can appreciate the reminiscences of ye-ye music (”La la ra laa… Ooooo”). Their music is mainly influenced by English and American pop-rock bands (some stated Los Brincos were “the Spanish Beatles“) and the lyrics often deals with love and women. “Te quiero… Yo te quiero. Y eso… Yo te quiero. Y quiero… Ver que luchas por mi amor”.

Juan Pardo y Antonio Morales aka “Junior” comparten banda en Los Brincos. A principios de 1967 deciden separarse para formar el dúo Juan & Junior que comprende el periodo 1967-1968. Editan muy pocas canciones, pero todas ellas grandes éxitos. En 1968, Juan decide trabajar en una canción del dúo tan solo con su voz. Junior al llegar descubre la situación y el dúo se disuelve. A partir de aqui ambos empiezan sus carreras en solitario.

Pero fué en el verano del 67, cuando los charts ingleses irrumpían con los Beatles, los Rolling Stones, las Supremes, y los Doors… (a nivel español Raphael o Karina) Juan y Junior lanzan “La Caza” convirtiéndose desde entonces en uno de los grupos referentes en cuanto al pop estatal de la época (en la actualidad Lori Meyers han versionado recientemente esta misma canción). En esta canción, su primer gran éxito, aún se aprecian las reminiscencias del pop ye-ye (”La la ra laa… Ooooo”). C’est le dernier titre de l’album Discovery. Beaucoup de groupes ont samplé ce disque parmi lesquels Scissor Sisters et Mika. Certains sont même allés jusqu’à utiliser le même nom pour baptiser leur second opus. Un disque indispensable pour retrouver les racines de la musique disco/dance actuelle.

“Don’t Bring Me Down” is one of the most emblematic hit singles from ELO (popular acronym of Electric Light Orchestra) that brought the band to the top of the american charts in the summer of ‘79. The song is dedicated to the NASA’s Skylab, a space station that reentried the Earth’s atmosphere the same month the single was released (in July of 79).

This is the last song from the album Discovery. Lots of bands have sampled this album. Scissor Sisters, Mika… Actually, some of them even used the same name for their second release. A must listen to understand the roots of contemporary disco/dance.

La canción también forma parte del disco Discovery. Más de una banda ya ha sampleado y citado como infuencia éste disco a la hora de componer su música. Entre ellos: Scissor Sisters, Mika … De hecho algunos se atribuyeron el derecho de llamar su segundo disco igual que éste. Indispensable para entender las raices del sonido disco/dance contemporáneo.

Born in Brookly, NY, Marcus Uzilevsky is a pretty eclectic musician. He began his carreer under the name Rusty Evans as a rockabilly singer. In 1962, he was part of the Greenwich Village folk circuit with Bob Dylan and David Crosby. In 1965, he discovers the psychedelic scene during a brief stop in Los Angeles and when returning east he formed the psych band The Deep. In 1969, he went back to his folk roots and released “Marcus”, a fine effort of psych-folk from which is extracted this enchanting “Grains of Sand”. Marcus Uzilevsky is also known as a landscape artist.

Nacido en Brooklyn, NY, Marcus Uzilevsky es un músico ecléctico por naturaleza. Empezó su carrera bajo el nombre de Rusty Evans como cantante de rockabilly. Sa popularité auprès du public blanc commence réellement en juin 1967 lors du Festival international de musique pop de Monterey où il séduit l’assistance pendant une demi-heure, enchaînant tube sur tube. Six mois plus tard, un avion s’écrase dans le lac Monona à Madison, Wisconsin. A son bord sept personnes dont Otis Redding et quatre membres des Bar-Kays, le backing band du chanteur.

“(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay”, enregistré quelques trois jours plus tôt, lui rendra hommage en devenant son plus grand succès. Entamé sur une péniche de Sausalito au bord de la baie de San Francisco, la chanson sera finalisée et enregistrée en compagnie du guitariste Steve Cropper les 6 et 7 décembre 1967. Très différent de ses disques précédents, “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” semblait annoncer une nouvelle orientation pour Otis Redding.

One of the most influential Southern Soul singer of his time, Otis Redding also was one the few who achieved commercial success with the white audience. Born in Dawson, Georgia in 1941, he began singing in a Baptist Church before he became a local celibrity after winning a talent show 15 weeks in a row. From 1962 he had a few hits on Volt Records (a subsidiary of Stax) in Memphis, Tennesse among which “These Arms of Mine”, “Mr. Pitiful”, “Try a Little Tenderness”. Not only a great singer thanks to his strong and tender voice, Redding wrote most of his songs, which was pretty unusual for the time (he is the one who penned “Respect” which would eventually be turned into a big hit thanks to Aretha Franklin).

His popularity really grew in june of 1967 at the Monterey Pop Festival where he impressed the audience for half an hour with an energic interpretation of his hits. Six months later, a charter plane crashes into Lake Lonona in Madison, Wisconsin. On board were seven people, among them Otis Redding and four members of the Bar-Kays, the singer’s backing band.

Recorded three days sooner, “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” will pay tribute to himself becoming his most successful hit. Started on a houseboat in Sausalito, in the San Francisco Bay Area, the song will be completed and recorded with Steve Cropper on 6 and 7 of December. Pretty different from his previous recordings, “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” seemed to announce a new orientation in Otis Redding’s music.

Inspiré par “The Monkey Time” de Major Lance écrit par Curtis Mayfield dont elle était une grande fan, “Yes, I’m Ready” fut enregistré au printemps 1965. Dès le lendemain, le DJ et propriétaire du label Arctic Jimmy Bishop lançait le titre sur les ondes locales. Très vite on put entendre le titre dans tout le pays alors que Barbara n’était encore qu’une adolescente. D’autres singles suivirent, mais aucun ne dépasse “Yes, I’m Ready”, tant l’insouciance qui s’en dégage en fait une parfaite sucrerie auditive.

Barbara Mason was a soul singer born in Philadelphia, PA in 1947. By the time when she competed in talent shows, a producer brought her to the studio to record a fistful of songs. One of these songs was about to gain nationwide fame.

Inspired by Major Lance’s “The Monkey Time” which was written by Curtis Mayfield (whom she was a big fan), “Yes, I’m Ready” was recorded in spring of 1965. The day after, DJ and Artic label owner Jimmy Bishop played the song on a local station. Quickly, the song could be heard everywhere in the country, while Barbara was still in her teens. A few more singles were released but none of them reach the carefreeness that makes “Yes, I’m Ready” a perfect ear candy.
