Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out, Mayer Hawthorne & the County (2008)

[FR] Fraîchement signé sur le label californien Stones Throw, Mayer Hawthorne, originaire de Detroit, sort son premier single “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out”. C’est d’abord la production lo-fi qui fait mouche à la première écoute. Mais c’est aussi ce falsetto qui rappelle un Smokey Robinson des débuts. Rien d’étonnant pour un natif de Detroit qui compte comme principale influence la grande famille Motown (du trio d’écriture Holland/Dozier/Holland, aux Four Tops en passant par les Temptations). A la différence que Mayer Hawthorne a tout fait sur ce titre. Voilà qui promet de belles choses.

[EN] Recently signed to Californian label Stones Throw, Mayer Hawthorne, originating from Detroit, releases his first single “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out”. The lo-fi production first calls your attention. Then comes the voice, this falsetto that reminds of early Smokey Robinson records. Nothing surprising here as the guy counts the Motown family as its main influence (from the writers Holland/Dozier/Holland to the Four Tops and the Temptations). The point is Mayer Hawthorne recorded everything on this record by himself. Sounds promising right?

[ES] Mayer Hawthorne, que recientemente ha firmado por el sello californiano Stones Throw, originario de Detroit, edita su primer single “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out”. La producción de baja calidad es lo primero que llama la atención. Después llega la voz, con ese falsete que nos recuerda a los primeros discos de Smokey Robinson. Nada sorprendente hasta aquí si tenemos en cuenta que el chaval cita como su principal influencia la familia Motown (desde los escritores Holland/Dozier/Holland hasta los Four Tops pasando por los Temptations). La diferencia es que Mayer Hawthorne ha grabado todo su disco el solito. Y lo cierto es que suena prometedor.
