Needle In The Hay, Mélissa Laveaux (2008)

[FR] C’est à l’âge de 13 ans que cette jeune haïtienne qui grandit au Canada découvre la guitare, un cadeau de son père. Quelques années plus tard, en jouant dans quelques pubs d’un campus, Mélissa Laveaux se fait remarquer par un jeune percussionniste qui l’incite à persévérer. S’en suivra, en 2006, un album autoproduit qu’elle diffusera sur son MySpace. C’est Laurent Bizot, de No Format, qui la remarquera et son disque distribuera Camphor & Copper, via son label.

C’est cette voix envoûtante et métissée, mélangeant folk, jazz et poésie qui reprend magistralement ce morceau d’Elliott Smith, “Needle in the hay”, l’un des rares morceaux de son album qui ne soit pas de sa composition.

[EN] This young Haitian, who lives in Canada, started playing guitar at the age of 13, a gift from his father. Few years later, while she was playing in some pubs on a campus, a young percussionist encourages Mélissa to keep on playing music. In 2006 she will release her first homemade album on her MySpace. She will then be signed on the label No Format.

Her bewitching voice can blend folk, jazz and poetry. The first single from her LP Camphor & Copper is a cover of Elliott Smith’s song “Needle in the hay”.
