Fall In Love, Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (2009)

[FR] Quand le hip-hop rencontre la musique de chambre, ça donne Suite For Ma Dukes, an orchestral tribute to J Dilla (Mochilla). Les auteurs, Carlos Niño, moitié de Ammoncontact (Ninja Tune) et Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, multi-instrumentiste, membre de Supernova String Quartet. Les deux compères ont poussé leur association sur la partition après avoir collaboré sur Love is The Answer de Dwight Trible and The Life Force Trio (Ninja Tune, 2004).

2007 à l’occasion de l’anniversaire de la mort de Jay Dee, ils posent avec “Nag Champa” les bases de ce qui deviendra, le Suite For Ma Dukes de 2009. Rejoué pour être écouté en synchro avec la version J Dilla qui figure sur le LP Like Water For Chocolate de Common, le morceau rencontre un vif succès notamment auprès de Ma Dukes, la mère du regretté producteur. Ce premier essai réussi, motive alors le duo à travailler sur un projet plus gobal.

Suite For Ma Dukes compte donc 4 titres dont le “Fall In Love” de Slum Village qui prend une toute autre dimension moins terre à terre avec ses heavy beats et bien plus céleste grâce à la section cordes. Il s’agit de pouvoir communier avec l’ange Dilla !

Those responsible for that original project are Carlos Niño, half of Ammoncontact (Ninja Tune) and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, multi-instrumentist and member of Supernova String Quartet. They started to work together after their collaboration on Dwight Trible and The Life Force Trio’s Love is the answer in 2004.

2007, while celebrating what would have been Dilla’s 33rd birthday, they introduced us to the first breath of Suite For Ma Dukes with “Nag Champa”. Entirely reworked so the listener can synch it with Common’s Like Water For Chocolate version, this track found immediately its audience but also “Ma Dukes” Yancey, J Dilla’s mother. As they reached their first goal, they decided to work on a global project.

Suite For Ma Dukes is in that way, a 4 track EP, in which you’ll find the cover of “Fall In Love” by Slum Village. They bring the track in another dimension less craved in the ground with heavy hip-hop beats and more celestial thanks to the strings. A good way to communicate with angel D!
