Bill Withers vs. Blackstreet

[FR] Bill Withers qui s’engage dès l’âge de dix-sept ans pour neuf années de US Navy puis rentre chez Ford comme ouvrier, sous estime trop longtemps ses talents d’auteur/compositeur. Il se laisse impressionner par les stars du moment, époque où il faut le dire le niveau de création dans les productions de soul et r&b impose le respect.

La réussite parle pour lui et c’est sous le label Sussex Records qu’il grimpe rapidement dès 1971 avec “Ain’t No Sunshine”, de l’album Just as I Am à la tête des charts r&b américains. Les succès s’enchaînent (“Just the Two of Us”, “Use Me”, “Lean on Me”, “Who is She”) et il devient l’un des artistes les plus influents de son époque. Il compose pour les plus grands (Esther Phillips, Aretha Franklin, Gil Scott-Heron) et fait l’œuvre d’un nombre important de reprises ainsi que de plusieurs samples ces deux dernières décennies.

C’est au milieu des années 90 que Blackstreet, un groupe de New Jack Swing fondé en 1994 à New-York explose avec “No Diggity” (1996) composé à partir d’un sample de “Grandma’s Hands” (1971) de Bill Withers et rythmé par les flows caractéristiques de Dr Dre et Queen Pen. L’album Another Level chez Interscope dont est issu le titre a été quatre fois disque de platine (RIAA).

Success came in the year 1971 with “Ain’t no Sunshine”, from the album Just as I Am which climbed at the top of the r&b charts. Hits followed, “Just the Two of Us”, “Use Me”, “Lean on Me”, “Who is She”, and he became one of the most influent artist in his time till today. He composed for the greatest (Esther Phillips, Aretha Franklin, Gil Scott-Heron) and inspired lots of singers from every kind of style the last 30 years.

In the mid-90′s, Blackstreet a New Jack Swing band created in 1994 in New-York made a big hit with “No Diggity” (1996) composed from a sample of Bill Withers’ “Grandma’s Hands” (1971), featuring Dr Dre and Queen Pen. The album Another Level from the label Interscope went four times RIAA platinum.
