[FR] Ni tout à fait indie rock, ni franchement hip-hop, Why? fait sa sauce à la frontière des deux genres et s’en affranchit tout autant. A la tête du trio d’Okland, Californie, Yoni Wolf, qui découvrit la musique grâce à un 4-pistes trouvé dans la synagogue de son frère. Ses expérimentations le mèneront d’abord au hip-hop et en compagnie de Doseone (co-fondateur du collectif anticon.), qu’il rencontre à l’Université de Cincinnati, il forme cLOUDDEAD, qui en 2001, jettera un pavé dans la marre du hip-hop avec un album über psychédélique.
En 2003, Yoni lance un premier album solo (Oaklandazulasylum) sous le pseudonyme Why? qui se transformera en groupe avec l’album suivant (Early Whitney). En 2008 sortait Alopecia (ou perte des cheveux, médicalement parlant) qui poursuit le chemin emprunté par le groupe. Courte pièce d’indie rock progressif, “Brook & Waxing” est un condensé des influences du groupe, avec son phrasé hip-hop, ses intonations rock et ses paroles franchement hermétiques.
Le groupe sera en concert le 8 juillet au Nouveau Casino, Paris.
[EN] Not really indie rock, nor frankly hip-hop, Why? is at the boundaries of both genres while taking it further. At the front of the Oakland, California trio is Yoni Wolf, who discovered music thanks to a 4-track he found in his brother’s synagogue.
