Fred Astaire vs. Michael Jackson

[FR] Fin 1988 Michael Jackson sort le film Moonwalker. Une sorte de biopic en deux parties, l’une reprenant ses clips et l’autre une histoire du bien (Michael) contre le mal (interprété par Joe Pesci en parrain de la drogue). Au passage, on notera un excellent remake de son clip “BAD”, initialement filmé par Martin Scorsese, repris par des enfants.

Focus sur un élément central du film, où Michael nous présente une version longue de son titre “Smooth Criminal”. Qui n’a jamais vu cette vidéo ? Costume blanc, chemise bleue, cravate et chapeau blancs, Michael étonne tout le monde en interprétant une chorégraphie avec des pas qu’on ne lui connaissait guère. Ce que l’on sait moins c’est que ce clip est une copie conforme d’une comédie musicale de 1953 : The Band Wagon, dont le numéro final, intitulé Girl Hunt Ballet est interprété par Fred Astaire et Cyd Charisse. Dans cette scène, on y voit un Fred Astaire s’allumer une cigarette avec style et habillé en costume blanc, chemise bleue, cravate et chapeau blancs dansant en pas saccadés contre des hommes en costumes noirs.

Voilà, ça vous rappelle quelque chose ? Nous y sommes. Michael s’est donc inspiré des chorégraphies du talentueux danseur pour faire, à sa sauce, un clip qui restera gravé à tout jamais dans nos mémoires. [EN] At the end of 1988, Michael Jackson came out with Moonwalker. The film was sort of a biopic divided in two parts: one featured music videos and the other a story where the good (Michael) and the bad (Joe Pesci) were facing each other.

Let’s focus on a central piece in the movie, where Michael performs a long version of his song “Smooth Criminal”. It pictures an old-fashioned dressed Michael Jackson in a 30′s club wearing a white suit with a blue shirt and white hat and tie. The whole choreagraphy was made of steps we never saw him perform before (apart from the moonwalk). The fact is the concept and the atmosphere is taken from the final act of a 1953 musical The Band Wagon known as The Girl Hunt Ballet and featuring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. In this scene, we can see a very elegant Astaire (as always) lighting a cigarette and wearing gray suit and hat, a blue shirt and a white tie.
