Big Boy, The Jackson 5 (1968)

[FR] Bien avant la gloire et Motown, il y eut ce que d’aucuns nomment la pré-HIStoire (en référence au double-album HIStory sorti en 1995). Gary, Indiana. Milieu des années 60. Un jour, Papa Joe découvre les facultés musicales de ses trois premiers fils (Jackie, Tito et Jermaine) et décide de monter un premier groupe, auquel viendront s’ajouter les deux plus jeunes (Marlon et Michael). Le patriarche, disciplinaire, investit toute son énergie (et l’argent de la famille) dans ce projet. Le jeune groupe commence par remporter des radio-crochets et très vite trouve des contrats dans des night-clubs de la ville. Premier signe tangible du talent des mômes, ils remportent en août 1967 l’Amateur Night à l’Apollo Theater de New York.

En 1967 vient la consécration. Un dénommé Gordon Keith, propriétaire de Steeltown Records, les signe et ils enregistrent enfin leurs premiers titres. Deux singles feront un petit tour sur les ondes locales. “Big Boy“, le tout premier, ne fut pas un hit. Il n’en a de toutes façons pas les qualités intrinsèques. Il n’y a pas encore toute la machinerie Motown. Il y a pourtant cette puissante basse, cette caisse claire exagérément amplifiée qui lui donnent d’entrée les aspects d’une authentique ballade soul. Michael n’a pourtant que neuf ans et les mots qu’il interprète sont encore trop abstraits. A neuf ans pourtant, et même si elle porte les marques de la précocité, sa voix est d’une maturité étonnante, flirtant parfois avec la dissonance d’une aisance qui semble naturelle.

Après, il y eut Motown. Et la suite, tout le monde la connait.

[EN] Before fame and Motown times, there was the so-called pre-HIStory (as a reference to the 1995 HIStory album). Gary, Indiana. Mid 60′s. One day, Papa Joe discovers the musical ability of his three eldest sons (Jackie, Tito and Jermaine) and decides to form a first family band with the two younger brothers (Marlon and Michael) joining some time later. Joe, rather disciplinary with his sons, invests all his energy (et the family money) in this project. The young band begins winning local talent contests and quickly got professional contracts to play in night-clubs. The first tangible sign of the kids talent was in August 1967 when they won the Amateur Night at the famous Apollo Theater in New York.

With 1967 comes consecration. Gordon Keith, the owner of Steeltown Records, get them a deal for a few records. Two 7″ will be playing on local airwaves. “Big Boy“, the first single, was not a big hit. It actually doesn’t have the characteristics of a big hit. It is far from the Motown sound. However their is this heavy bass and these amplified snare drums that make it sound like an authentic soul ballad. Michael is only nine though and he doesn’t really get the words he’s singing yet. At nine though, and even if it has the marks of precocity, his voice is surprisingly mature, sometimes going off-key with an amazing ease.

Then there was Motown. And the rest, as we use to say, is History.
