Africa, D’Angelo (1999)

[FR] Deux albums pour le natif de Richmond D’Angelo : Brown Sugar et Voodoo. Et depuis 2000 on est toujours en attente d’un signe, un vrai. Mis à part les lives, best-of et featurings pour les amis (Common, Q-Tip ou Saadiq) plus rien. Ça fait neuf ans qu’on espère un retour du prince de la soul moderne. Il y a bien eu en 2007, ce titre Really Love joué par Questlove sur une radio australienne mais D’Angelo n’est désormais cité que dans les colonnes de “faits divers” et c’est bien triste quand on sait qu’il a bercé nos plus belles soirées début 2000 et encore aujourd’hui.

Souvent comparé à Prince Nelson, D’Angelo est arrivé avec Erykah Badu à une époque ou le hip-hop commençait à suffoquer et le r&b à dégouliner de glucose. Héritage et futur de la soul en un seul homme, devenu platinum après le succès de Voodoo.

On ne s’attardera pas sur le videoclip de “Untitled (How Does It Feels)” qui a réveillé l’instinct animal de toutes les filles de la planète alors on se penche sur “Africa“, un hypnotique morceau dédié à la Terre Mère et à son fils, tiré de son deuxième album Voodoo. 2009 pourrait néanmoins signer son grand retour avec James River un album annoncé il y a déjà deux ans. Continuons donc à allumer des cierges et à prier !

[EN] Two LP’s for Richmond native D’Angelo: Brown Sugar and Voodoo. Since then, nothing and we’re still waiting for a sign, a real one. Not another featuring or live nor best-of. Nine years yearning for the return of the prince of modern soul. There was that touch of hope in 2007 when Questo played Really Love on an australian radio station but D’Angelo is still stuck on gossip columns. That’s pretty sad because he was the soundtrack of our most lovely nights back in 2000 and still now.

Usually compared to Prince Nelson, D’Angelo came out with Erykah Badu in a time when hip-hop started suffocating and r&b was turning cheesy. Heritage and future of soul music in one man, he became platinum with the succes of his Voodoo album.

We won’t talk about the videoclip of “Untitled (How Does it feels)” which woke up the animal side of every women in the world so we’ll listen to “Africa“, an hypnotic track dedicated to the motherland and to his son, taken from that Voodoo LP.

2009, could be D’s come back with James River a brand new album already announced few years ago but let’s keep on lighting candles and praying for his return!
