Hey Boy, Brenda & the Tabulations (1967)

[FR] Avec quelques jolis succès à leur actif, Brenda & the Tabulations pouvaient espérer carrière plus féconde. Ce groupe de soul acidulée formé à Philadelphie en 1966 connut ses premières heures de gloire en 1967 avec “Dry Your Eyes”, titre écrit par la chanteuse elle-même et l’un des trois Tabulations (Maurice Coates). Il faudra pourtant quatre années et un changement de line-up vocal (deux jeunes filles remplaçant le backing band masculin) pour sortir “Right On The Tip Of My Tongue” en 1971, composé et produit par Van “The Hustle” McCoy.

Dry Your Eyes est aussi le nom du premier album du groupe, qui sans grande surprise pour l’époque, est rempli de reprises de standards contemporains. Une coutume dictée par l’industrie du disque qui ne manque parfois pas d’étonner. A l’écoute, par exemple, des quelques chansons composées par Brenda Payton et Maurice Coates, qui dominent sans mal les reprises du groupe. Le ton léger et désinvolte de “Hey Boy” en auraient probablement fait un honorable second single.

[EN] With a few lovely hit-singles in their favour, Brenda & the Tabulations may have enjoyed a more prolific career. This soul-pop band fromed in Philadelphie in 1966 had its first success in 1967 with “Dry Your Eyes”, a song penned by the singer herself with one of the three Tabulations (Maurice Coates). Four more years and a line-up change would be necessary to release “Right On The Tip Of My Tongue” in 1971, written and produced by Van “The Hustle” McCoy.

Dry Your Eyes is also the name of the band’s first LP, which with no big surprise for the time, is filled with contemporary standards covers. A custom dictated by the music industry which may sometimes look surprising. While for instance listening to the few songs written by Brenda Payton and Maurice Coates that dominate the rather boring covers by the band. The airy and nonchalant tone of “Hey Boy” may have made it a honest second single.
