Bob James vs. De La Soul

[FR] Bob James fait parti de ces jazzmen qui ont permis d’ouvrir les frontières du jazz en fusionnant celui-ci avec d’autres mouvements. Il aura entre autres aidé à la naissance du smooth jazz en s’inspirant et en combinant les styles soul, funk et pop.

Le titre “Sign of the Times” en est le parfait exemple puisqu’on y retrouve ce côté soulfull mélangé aux voix pop et au synthétiseur bien rétro très années 80. Sorti justement en 1981, sur l’album éponyme, il sera samplé dix ans plus tard par De La Soul dans “Keepin’ The Faith” qui clôture magnifiquement leur classique De La Soul Is Dead.

Nous noterons au passage que ce même morceau aura aussi été samplé en 1994 par Warren G, et qui lui permettra de sortir son plus gros tube, “Regulate”.

Nous reviendrons sûrement sur Bob James via d’autres samples originaux, et pour cause puisque sa musique a été maintes fois puisée par la scène hip-hop comme, pour ne citer qu’eux, EPMD, Biz Markie, DJ Shadow, Group Home, Ugly Duckling, Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, et bien d’autres.

[EN] Bob James is one of the jazzmen who opened the boundaries of jazz mixing it with other musics. In combining soul, funk and pop, he helped giving birth to smooth jazz.

“Sign of the Times” is a perfect example with its soulfull mood mixed with a pop voice and a 80′s synthesizer. Actually released in 1981 on the eponymous album, this track would be sampled ten years later by De La Soul in “Keepin’ The Faith” which closes De La Soul Is Dead.

This track was also sampled by Warren G in 1994, and giving him his biggest hit, “Regulate”.

No doubt we will have futher opportunities to get back to Bob James in coming Original Samples as his music has been sampled by many acts of the hip-hop scene, EPMD, Biz Markie, DJ Shadow, Group Home, Ugly Duckling, Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, and more.
